Last Tuesday, the Skidmore-Tynan Jr. High football teams traveled to Freer to open up district play. Unfortunately for the Cats, they lost both contests.
In the 7th grade game, the Cats could not get things going. The host Buckaroos, after stopping the Cats on a 4th and short try, drove the length of the field and scored to take a 6-0 lead. The lead increased to 12-0 at the half. Freer continued its scoring ways in the second half as the Bucks went on to win 26-0.
In the 8th grade game, the visiting Cats got on the board quickly as Alex Gonzales raced 80 yards on the opening kickoff return to put the Cats in front 6-0. The score increased to 8-0 as Adam Perez added the 2 point conversion. Freer then drove down the field after the kickoff. During the drive, Bobcat linebacker Kevin Shumake picked up a Freer fumble and raced 70 yards for a T.D. Adam Perez again scored a 2 point conversion to make the score 16-0 Cats. Midway through the 1st quarter. Freer mounted a punishing running attack which set up a 10 yard run to trail 16-6 after one quarter. The Cats opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter as they too put together a scoring drive. The drive saw plenty of good blocks from the offensive line which led to good runs by Joe Manuel Casarez, Perez, and Gonzales. On this drive Perez scored from 10 yards out to gie the Cats a 22-6 lead. The Bucks added a score before the half to close the gap to 22-14 and tied the score at 22-22 during the 3rd quarter. Late in the 3rd quarter and early 4th, the Cats put together a long drive only to be stopped deep in Freer territory. Freer pulled ahead 30-22 midway through the 4th quarter and stopped a furious Bobcat drive as time expired giving the Bucks a 30-22 win. -- Submitted by coach John Salinas
