Speak Up for Our Future

Can you imagine being a child in our public schools today, what about tomorrow?  Texas Public Schools and especially our S-T ISD, operate on a very low budget and now our government would like to cut that small budget drastically.  How are our educators supposed to teach their students, our children, without the proper tools?  How are the school administrators supposed to hire and keep qualified teachers with no money?  These children are our future and they deserve the best!  You may think this is not your problem because you don't have school age children, or maybe your children are in private schools or home schooled.  But it is your problem because these children will be the leaders of tomorrow and they need our help.

It may be difficult to figure out what to do or say, so below are some ideas, downloadable sample letters, and where to respond.  Please take some time today to stand up for our future!

Ideas on what to ask your elected officials:

  • Make education a priority.
  • Use the $9.3 Billion Texas "Rainy Day" Fund to support our schools.
  • Approve $830 Million in federal aid for our teachers.
  • Make school funding laws fair to all districts and to our growing student population.

Presidents' Day Observed

Presidents' Day was originally observed on February 22nd for our founding father's birthday, George Washington.  President Washington became the first President of the United States of America in 1789.  Something you may not know about George Washington, is that on the day of his wedding to Martha he received a gift from his wife to be.  It was a miniature portrait of her, that he wore on a chain around his neck until the day he died, 40 years later.

We now observe all our American Presidents on the third Monday of February, since 1971.   For a timeline of all 44 Presidents with simple facts about each of them, visit the Scholastic's website.

S-T Junior High Recognized

Skidmore-Tynan Junior High Recognized as a 2010 NCEA Higher Performing School

The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), recognized The Skidmore-Tynan Junior High School for making the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List.

The Higher Performing Schools are identified by two measures: consistent improvement in student achievement from previous years and/or absolute student achievement using the school's Commended Performance results on the spring 2010 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test.  The measures identify schools that outperform their peers that serve similar student populations.  Additionally, the school must have greater than expected academic growth for three consecutive years to make the NCEA Higher Performing Schools List.

Research consistently shows that students who are only meeting the state’s passing standard during their K-12 experience do not graduate high school ready for college or careers.  Therefore the higher Commended standard on the TAKS provides a more accurate measure of student preparedness toward postsecondary opportunities.

This award recognizes the outstanding students and staff of the Skidmore-Tynan Junior High school whose reading program is second to none.   Although the program is demanding, the students reap the benefits of their hard work.
