Enter Church Raffle to Win Custom BBQ Pit

Shabree and Zachary Mortensen with the big pit!

You may have noticed the very large, very nice, top-of-the-line barbeque pit that has been in front of the parish hall of Immaculate Conception Church, in recent days. It was made and given to the parish by a very talented and generous donor, and is being raffled off. The drawing will take place on Sunday, Apri 17th. Tickets are being sold now for one dollar each or six for five dollars. You can purchase tickets from many of the parishioners, or by coming by the parish office during business hours. Small community raffles usually provide the best chances for winning prizes. -- Submitted by Wanda Mortensen

Don't Miss Luxury Bus to Nuevo Progreso

The April 16 trip by luxury bus to San Juan de Valle and Nuevo Progreso is scheduled to leave from in front of Immaculate Conception Church at 5:00 a.m. If necessary, the bus will stop in Tynan to pick up anyone who would rather board from there, and then also will pick up travelers boarding from the front edge of the Super Walmart parking lot in Calallen. If you are boarding from either of these extra locations, you must call and let us know or the bus will not stop there. The bus will be on the road approximately 4 hours each way. It is estimated that we will arrive back home sometime around 6pm.

All ticket money must be turned in before Monday, April 4. You can call Lydia Longoria in the parish office (287-3256) during regular hours of Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between the hours of 9am and 3pm. Or you can call Wanda Mortensen at 287-3573. -- Submitted by Wanda Mortensen

From Bargains to Bundt Cakes - Support Weekend Fundraisers

Saturday morning will provide early risers with ample opportunities to find a bargain at one of two local fundraisers. As part of the annual Bee County Yard Sale Trail, there will be a rummage sale in the parish hall of Immaculate Conception Parish this Saturday, April 2. It will begin at 8 a.m. and go through the afternoon or until everything is sold. There will also be a plant sale with plants being donated from gardeners around the area. Leo Franco is donating 36 tomato plants, Mr. and Mrs. Brundrett from Normanna are donating monkey grass, some ferns and more, and others are donating Mexican Petunias, Wandering Jew, Ice Plant, and various other plants. Don’t miss this event. All money raised will go to the children’s religious education program.

And over at the Skidmore Museum, the Skidmore Historical Society will be holding a Bake Sale, also in conjunction with the Bee County Yard Sale Trail. The bake sale will commence at 9:30 a.m., giving the aforementioned rummage/plant sale shoppers plenty of time to attend both events.

S-T Drama Department Previews One Act Play

Matchmaker Pearl Brisistsky (Lindsey Estes) and Chaim Shotsky (Brett Howard).

A young woman visits the park and is drawn into the life of an elderly Jewish man in "Chaim's Love Song," a play by Marvin Chernoff. The S-T High School Drama Department presented a public preview of the one-act play Monday to an appreciative audience of students, teachers, and parents. The play will next be presented Thursday in Three Rivers at the District Competition.

Notable performances included Brett Howard as the title character Chaim Shotsky, Katlynn Mengers as Kelly Burke, and Rob Boscamp as Oscar Birnbaum. The Signal notes that Rob has made a short but successful career of playing old codgers! Katy Casas showed impressive emotional range in her portrayal of holocaust survivor Tsawrah Shotsky. And finally, Lindsey Estes offered up a nice touch of comic relief as the gaudily feather-headed matchmaker Pearl Brisistsky. More photos online at Shutterfly.com

Local Businesses Gear Up for Easter

The Signal recently visited with Nancy Crouch, proprietress of the Variety Shop. Mrs. Crouch put together some nice easter baskets which are available for purchase at her store over Easter weekend. Across the street at Dalia's Cafe, David and Dalia Gonzales are doing a brisk business in hand-made Cascarones (confetti eggs) - no need for a trip to Walmart for mass-produced confetti eggs. Dalia's is also raffling off Easter Baskets. Mike says for $50 you can just take your pick of the baskets!-)

Kevin Crottie assists Lions Club President David Waishes in pulling a winning ticket as sister Rebecca looks on.

With the help of Lion Russell Duggins' grandchildren, Kevin and Rebecca Crottie, the S-T Lions drew the winning tickets in their 3rd Annual Good Friday Easter Basket Raffle. The Lions raffled off 3 baskets this year and the lucky winners were Pat Petrus, Landon Burch, and Noe Valverde. The Lions thank the winners and others who bought raffle tickets for supporting Lions Club charities. Thanks also to Lion Dee LeCount for hosting the drawing at the Chisholm Trail Cafe.

The raffle assistants weren't left empty handed.

Sports Pics - No 7th Inning Magic Versus Taft

Bubba Gonzales lays down a bunt. Unlike last week's game, and despite loading the bases in the 7th inning, the Bobcats were unable to muster a come-from-behind win over Taft. The Signal predicts the Bobcats will prevail when the two teams meet again April 22nd.

CorridorWatch.org - Time to Act is Now

Margaret Mead said, "A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." NOW is the time for OUR small group to change the world. We have been given an opportunity to postpone the otherwise certain development of the Trans-Texas Corridor and the statewide proliferation of state toll roads. Each of us has a solemn responsibility to do whatever it takes to protect our rights and those of our fellow Texans. As citizens, we have every right to demand that our state government listen to the people it represents. The only means we have to protect our rights is to exercise them. WE MUST CALL ON THOSE ELECTED TO REPRESENT US TO DO JUST THAT - REPRESENT US AND OUR CONCERNS.

Call and write your State Representative.
House District 35 - Representative YVONNE GONZALEZ TOUREILLES
Capitol Address: P.O. Box 2910, Austin, TX 78768
Capitol Phone: (512) 463-0645
District Address: P.O. Box 2910, Austin, TX 78768

Call and write your State Senator.
Texas State Senator, District 21, JUDITH ZAFFIRINI
Capitol Address: P.O. Box 12068, Austin, Texas 78711
Capitol Phone: (512) 463-0121
District Address: P.O. Box 627, Laredo, TX 78042
District Phone: (956) 722-2293

Call your County Judge and Commissioner.
Judge Jimmy Martinez (361)362-3260
Precinct 1 Commissioner Carlos Salazar, Jr. (361) 362-3205
Precinct 2 Commissioner Susan C. Stasny (361) 362-3220
Precinct 3 Commissioner Eloy Rodriguez (361) 362-3210
Precinct 4 Commissioner Ronnie E. Olivares (361) 362-3215

Ask for their support of the provisions found in HB-3363. Demand that the state slow down the rush for toll roads and allow voters, taxpayers, and citizens the opportunity to understand and evaluate the unavoidable impact that the Trans-Texas Corridor and toll roads will have on Texas. Call your neighbors, friends, and family throughout the state. Ask them to do as you have and give us all the opportunity to look before TxDOT leaps. IF WE DO NOT ACT ON THIS OPPORTUNITY OUR CAUSE MAY BE LOST.

Generations of Texans, our children and grandchildren, will bear the costs and burdens of bad decisions motivated by greed and made in haste. It is one thing to study an issue and despite everyone's best efforts make a bad decision, but to rush forward with reckless abandon is unforgivable.

Sports Pics - Varsity Pulls Off Last Minute Win

Shortstop Blake Stautzenberger goes after a George West grounder.

With the score 6-1 in George West's favor, Allen Berthold started off a 7th inning rally with a line drive to left field. Bobcat fans thought the game was over when Jeremy Johnson cleared the bases with another drive to left. Unfortunately, the ball rolled under the fence and Jeremy and the runner in front of him were returned to base on a ground rule double. Score 6-5. George West chose to walk the last batter in the line up, power hitter Blake Stautzenberger, allowing Allen Berthold a second at-bat in the inning. Big mistake. Allen tee'd off on the first pitch with a long fly ball to center field, driving in the game winning runs.

Winning isn't everything, but it beats the alternative.

Update: These and other photos of the varsity win over George West have been posted to Shutterfly.com.

Sneaky Beaurocrats Attempt End Run Around Public Opposition to Trans Texas Corridor

From CorridorWatch.com: Without advance public notice, and announced late on the last day for legislative bills to be filed without the Governor's approval, TxDOT Officials joined by Governor Perry and Federal Highway Administrator Mary Peters signed a 342-page agreement with Cintra Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte SA (Madrid, Spain) to create a master plan to finance and build the TTC-35 Trans Texas Corridor generally parallel to IH-35 from the Valley to the Red River. Despite growing concerns over the TTC project, Governor Perry and state officials are charging ahead as quickly as possible to build the first 600-mile segment of the 4,000-mile Trans Texas Corridor. Water and Waste Services Now Available to West Side Residents

Skidmore residents west of 4th Street may now apply for  water and sewer services from the Skidmore Water Supply Corporation (SWSC). All residents within the original facility plan will receive hook ups at no cost. Low to low moderate income families meeting ORCA grant requirements will be able to hook up immediately as that grant is in place. Families not meeting ORCA requirements may opt to hook up now for a fee or wait until USDA funds become available hopefully in 2 to 3 months.

Applications for service are available at the Skidmore Water Supply Corporation office located next to Papa's Market. Office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A $25 refundable deposit for waste water and a $25.00 deposit for water will be required on all new residential accounts.

Q. Do I have to have to hook up to city water and sewer services?

A. State Regulations require you to hook up to sewer services if your property line is within 200 feet of a waste water gathering line. You do not have to hook up to city water, however if you do not hook up to the water at this time you will be obligated to pay for this service in the future.

Q. What is the monthly fee for water and wastewater?

A. Water will be billed at $20.25 for first 2000 gallons plus $2 per additional 1000 gallons. Wastewater will be billed at a flat rate of $25.00 per month. Business and church rates will be based on usage.

Q. What will it cost if I decide to hook up to city water at a later date?

A. Membership fees are $100 for water and $100 for wastewater. Membership fees for residents covered under the facilities plan will be paid by the ORCA and USDA grants provided they connect to the system within 3 months from the date services become available. Residents who postpone water hookup will have to pay the fee plus yardline fees and other cost.

Q. I am planning to build a new home in Skidmore. How much will it cost to hook up to city water and wastewater services?

A. An impact fee of $2,288.00 for water and $1,955.00 for wastewater will be charged to new customers not covered under the 1999 facilities plan. Impact fees will be deposited into a separate account to cover the future expense of expanding the plant.

Q. Will we still have hard water?

A. The water comes from two 600 foot wells and its low mineral content will result in relatively “soft water.” The chemical analysis is available for review at the SWSC office.

Don't Miss Bus Tour & Shopping in Nuevo Progreso

Shopping in Nuevo Progreso.

Wanda Mortensen informs the Signal that bus seats are selling quickly for the upcoming trip to the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle National Shrine. After visiting the shrine, the group will go shopping in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. This is the second such trip organized by Immaculate Conception Parish, and the money raised will benefit the children’s religious education fund. The date for this year’s trip is Saturday, April 16, and the cost per ticket is $30. The trip is open for one and all and with last year’s excursion being such a success, it is expected that the tickets will sell out. There is limited availability, so if anyone reading this is interested, please contact Wanda Mortensen (287-3573) or Lydia Longoria at the parish office (287-3256). The parish office is open Mondays, and Wednesdays through Fridays from 9am until 3pm.

The bus is a very comfortable luxury coach, complete with a movie to be shown during the drive. Wanda Mortensen made quite a few trips to Nuevo Progresso in recent weeks, accompanying a friend for dentist visits and shopping while she was occupied. They found it to be clean, safe, and totally hassle-free. They had no problems whatsoever, even driving in and parking in front of the dentist’s office. There were no overly pushy salespersons and no panhandlers, and it was a very enjoyable experience. In fact, there were many American tourists shopping there as well – mostly retirees enjoying their leisure.

If anyone reading this would like to make a trip there, don’t hesitate to buy your bus ticket now. With a group setting, and being there in the morning and early to mid afternoon, it will be safe and fun. You can see from the pictures that it is a very colorful, interesting place.

Untitled Prismacolor drawing by Sara Schirmer.

Saxophone ensemble John Salinas, Victoria Lopez, Zach Petrus, and Nick Gentry recently earned a berth in state competition. The group repeated its award winning performance at the opening of the S-T High School Art Exhibit at the school library. Ensemble member John Salinas wowed the assembled parents, teachers, and students with his solo performance of Pachelbel's "Canon in D." While enjoying the excellent live musical performances, attendees perused the various visual artworks on display throughout the library. Congratulations to all students earning a spot in the exhibition and also to art instructor Calistro Garcia, and band director Florencio Lara, for bringing out the best in their students.

Blogger Joins in Fight Against Trans Texas Corridor

Stacie Bednorz informs the Signal of yet another website, in this case a "blog," speaking out in opposition to the ill advised Trans Texas Corridor. The new Trans-Texas Corridor blog (similarities to the Signal are purely coincidental) contains many links to other sites including the original CorridorWatch.org. The Signal points you again to this map. Look for Bee County at the intersection of 3 proposed corridor routes.

Fight for Your Right to High Speed Internet Access

Texas phone and cable companies are currently lobbying hard to ram through state legislation (House Bill 789) banning towns from offering Internet services at a lower cost. HB 789 would make it illegal for towns and cities to provide cheaper Internet access to their residents. Small municipalities like Skidmore are not profitable for these large telecommunications corporations and, under HB 789, would be denied the right to set up their own local hi-speed networks. Call your state representative (Rep. Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles 512-463-0645) and let her know that you are against allowing corporate lobbies to monopolize our state's Internet access.

S-T Alumna Founds School for Autistic Children

Former S-T graduate Marsha Rogers Coulter, recently helped found a Corpus Christi school for autistic children. Marsha's youngest daughter, and namesake of the organization, Hannah, was born with autism. Recognizing the need for a targeted educational environment for Hannah, and other children with the same disorder, Marsha, and husband Tommy Coulter, sought out other parents of autistic children to consolidate their resources. The result was Hannah's Hope, an organization dedicated to the education of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Though still in its infancy, the goal of Hannah's Hope is to provide a highly individualized program that will address the needs of each child utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis, a scientific discipline that has proven to be an effective intervention for individuals with Autism and Developmental Disabilitities. Read more about Hannah's Hope at www.hannahs-hope.info.
