Bobcats Fall to Refugio

Cory Markham vaults a Refugio player. Photo courtesy of Larry Doonan. For more game photos, visit Doonan Photography. Click on Galleries, then Online Proofing to view the album.

The Refugio Bobcats were on fire Friday night as they defeated Skidmore-Tynan 57 - 14 to clinch the 1st place spot in District competition. While the final score was a bit lopsided against the 3rd-ranked-in-state Refugio team, our boys gave their all and fought to the very end. We look forward to this week's home game vs. Bloomington.

With George West's loss to Taft on the same evening, the S-T Cats now find themselves in a 3-way tie for the 3rd place playoff spot with Taft and Three Rivers, and a possible 2nd place finish if George West loses to Three Rivers this week. Go Bobcats!

A.F. Lutts Token Sells on Ebay

A rare "A.F. Lutts" token recently sold for $54.11 on eBay, the popular online auction site. "A.F. Lutts" was one of Skidmore's first general mercantile stores. It was among 18 local businesses destroyed by fire back in 1919. The proprietor, Mr. A.F. Lutts, later served as mayor of Beeville in 1912-13. Mr. Lutts died in 1933 and is buried in Beeville's Glenwood cemetery.

The "Beeville Bee" reported on the fire that destroyed the A.F. Lutts store and others:

Fire Wipes Out Skidmore's Principle Business Section - Blaze at Early Hours Yesterday Morning Razes Eighteen Frame Buildings

THE BEEVILLE BEE, May 29, 1919 - Beeville's Motor-Driven Equipment Taken to Scene of Conflagration. Fire yesterday morning at an early hour wiped out the principle business section of Skidmore. Bee county town of 1500 people, eleven miles south of Beeville. Eighteen frame buildings were razed by the flames. No estimate of the loss has been made. Little insurance was carried, as the rate for he district was almost prohibitive - the risk on account of the frame structures closely clustered being unusually hazardous. The heaviest losers, doubtless, were M. J. White, who conducted a general merchandise store, and J. B. Hollingsworth, proprietor of the Worth Drug Store. Much of the merchandise and fixtures were saved from the buildings. Aside for the Messrs. White and Hollingsworth other losers were: Titus Boerm who conducted a pool hall; Hugo Russek, restaurant; Howard Faupel, barber shop and Hill & Konce, K.T. Garage. some of the owners of buildings which were destroyed were E. B. Kessler, A. F. Lutts, Doubrava & Bohac and Mrs. Emil Eichblatt. The origin of the fire is unknown. It started in a building that had been vacant for many months. In some quarters it is believed it was of incendiary origin.

ICC Fall Festival a Success

A perfect outdoor setting attracted a large group of music aficionados to this year’s ICC Fall Festival as they listened to local band, Indomable. Enjoying the day with Father Sebastian were Agapito and Pablo Gonzales of Skidmore. - Photo by Delia Soto.

Immaculate Conception Church held its annual Fall Festival Sunday, October 7th, in a day of fellowship and togetherness. It also welcomed the community and folks from surrounding areas to the annual event.

"On behalf of ICC, I would like to thank everyone who came out and shared the day with us and to everyone who contributed to its great success. Your support is truly appreciated. We are grateful to Valero for its generous contribution of a barbecue pit donated in memory of Efraim “Jr.” Lopez as well as to our parishioners and businesses for their donations. Jr. was a valued parishioner of ICC who was tragically killed a year ago in an automobile accident. A special thanks to Dolores Perez and Ballet Folklorico, Indomable, El Grupo Temblor and DJ David Mendez, who provided great entertainment to the large crowd in attendance. I sincerely wish to thank the congregation for its loyal support and generosity. It gives me great comfort knowing that I can always count on you."

"Thank you and God bless." -- Father Sebastian."

The grand-prize winner of the barbecue pit was ICC parishioner Eva Garza, pictured at right.

Signal Readers Range Far and Wide

It's good to know that servicemen/women stationed in the middle of nowhere enjoy reading the Signal.

I am always amazed when I check the Signal logs and find people across the nation and the world are visiting the site. Some are no doubt finding the Signal by accident via some random internet search. I noticed that earlier today someone searched for "corey isaacks, texas" and instead found "Clint Isaacks." But how is someone from Entre Rios (Argentina), or Hanoi (Vietnam), finding the Signal? How about Hollywood (Florida), Waterloo (Canada), or Anchorage (Alaska)? Many European countries are on the list including France, Ireland, Belgium and a whopping 38 visitors from various parts of Germany.

If you are visiting the Signal from outside the immediate South Texas area, please post a comment letting us know where you are from and how you found out about the Signal (even if by accident).

CRIME OF THE WEEK 10/8/2007
Fuller Tractor Company Weekend Theft

On the weekend of October 6th or 7th, Fuller Tractor at 1905 W. Corpus Christi (Hwy 59) was the victim of a theft. Unknown persons entered onto the property and stole a Camouflage Bush Hog ATV, an air compressor, and a New Holland Zero Turn mower. The suspects entered the property off of FM 351 via the empty lot between the Dairy Queen truck parking area and the Church and loaded the items onto a truck or trailer. Someone may have seen some activity here but thought nothing of it.

Anyone with any knowledge of this theft is asked to please call the Crimestoppers Tip line at 362-0206 or Detective Reynolds at Beeville Police Dept. at 358-8100. A reward amount of $1000 has been set on this crime.
