Señal De Skidmore
The public service announcement below was provided by Mr. Montemayor in English and Spanish. I'm not sure how many non-English speaking people read the Signal online but for those who do, the website can be translated (with varying degrees of success!) into virtually any language thanks to the wizards at Google. Spanish speakers, for example, may click on Señal De Skidmore. Or, use Google Language Tools to translate this or any other website into the language of your choice.
NOTE: Software generated translations often read like gibberish but are good for a laugh - and you can usually get the general idea of the story.

ICC Parishioners Enjoy Christmas Program
Immaculate Conception parish held their annual Childrens Christmas program and parish Christmas party last Sunday evening. The performance began with the Posada, which ended in the parish hall, with Mary and Joseph arriving at the stable. Then the play Searching for the Christ Child, created and directed by Reeys Falcon, continued the story. Shepherds carrying lambs or staffs searched in the audience for the Child, finally arriving at the stable. Angels appeared and the Star of Bethlehem moved in place ahead of the shepherds then settled over the manger. Songs included in the production were We See the Star, Where is the Child?, Silent Night and Joy to the World.
Afterwards, each individual performer walked on stage, was introduced, bowed and proceeded across to the opposite side.
Actors were: Mary, Beatrice Hinojosa; Joseph, Ralph Hinojosa; Baby Jesus, newborn Ralph Hinojosa, Jr.; Shepherds: Janelle Castaneda, Tori Contreras, Adam Gonzales, Maria Hernandez, Alyssa Hinojosa, Isabel Hinojosa, Shabree Mortensen, Tres Ortiz, Eddie Salas, Alexandra Sifuentes, Cassandra Soto, Clarissa Soto, Katrina Soto, Salvador Soto III, Pedro Torres, Viviana Torres and Christiana Trevino. A Bit of Local History on Ebay
Someone in San Antonio is auctioning an 1876 "Craven & Skidmore" billhead on Ebay. The bill reads "Papalote, Texas - Dealers in General Merchandise - Cash paid for hides and wool" and lists a series of items at 1876 prices. We can't quite make out who signed for the bill. S-T Christmas Concert
Mr. Lara addresses the audience at the 2005 Christmas Concert.
S-T ISD Junior High and High School music students, under the direction of Florencio Lara, entertained a packed house at Thursday's Fall Christmas concert. The audience enjoyed a program by the 6th Grade band, 7th Grade band, and High School band and choir. Notable performances included the 6th graders' humorously titled "Old McLara Had a Band," an audience participation sing-along of "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer," and the always popular "Ukrainian Bell Carol" as performed by the High School band. The program ended with the audience standing, per classical tradition, to Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus." Oh yes, and "Happy Birthday Mr. Schirmer!"

Drama Department Presents Hilarious Fall Production
Coleman Mengers runs down "Sue" played by Miranda Bohac in a tragic bus accident.
The S-T ISD Drama Department, directed by instructor Pam Keeton, presented "Competition Piece" Sunday, December 11th. The production was a humorous take on High School "One Act Play" contests, and lots of fun for audience and actors/actresses alike.
Highlights included Rob Boscamp's Japanese puppetry, "Coach Grubowski" played by Elizabeth Torres, and lots of hippy weirdness by Stephanie Schirmer as "Mrs. Melloncamp."
If this piece is any indication of things to come, this year's One Act Play should be a winner!

Recycle Your Old Cell Phone
A used cell phone and ink cartridge collection is underway sponsored by the Bee Proud Bee Clean organization. If you have a used cell phone collecting dust somewhere in your home or office now is the time to see that it is disposed in an environmentally friendly way. If you are like most Americans, chances are you probably do--the average American replaces his or her cell phone every 12 months. The result is that Americans discard more than 130 million used cell phones a year. That’s four cell phones per second! All of which adds up to 65,000 tons of potentially toxic waste generated annually.
Bee Proud Bee Clean in cooperation with EcoPhones, a Texas cell phone recycler, seeks to address this growing concern while simultaneously raising money for its community projects. In the Cell Phone Recycling Fundraiser, the group is paid for each digital cell phone collected. EcoPhones refurbishes and resells cell phones that have value and recycle the remainder in accordance with EPA regulations. Used printer ink cartridges are also being collected. This is the groups second cell phone recycling effort. The first held in the Spring was considered very successful for a first time effort.
Cell phone and ink cartridge collection boxes are available at the Bee County Tax Assessor-Collectors Office located at 411 E. Houston, Beeville. Used cell phones and ink cartridges (those that will fit in the palm of your hand ONLY) may be dropped off during regular office hours at that location. This recycling effort will end on December 31 so the public is asked to make their donations as soon as possible. For more information on the cell phone and ink cartridge recycling program please call 375-2558. -- Submitted by Elizabeth Villines

Skidmore "Elves" Help Deliver Christmas Gifts to Underpriveleged
From left to right: Sylvia Silva of Beeville and, from Skidmore, Lydia Pena, Elida Gonzales, Josie Gonzales, and Sam Pena. Also helping, but not pictured, were Josie DeLeon and Irma Stinson of Beeville.
On Thursday, December 8th, a member of the Signal staff was privileged to tour the Vineyard in Beeville. In addition to countless charitable works performed throughout the year, the Vineyard gathers toys for distribution to underprivileged families each Christmas. Not surprisingly, several members of our own little community volunteered their time to sorting and wrapping gifts for the less fortunate. The Signal salutes the selfless contributions of these individuals and encourages others to follow their lead. What a great way to give something back to the community!

It's all those pesky advertising banners! Yep, they're gone but not forgotten. We've moved the shameless commercialism to a wholly separate page and are dedicating page one to all things local. From this point forward, if you feel like buying something (and supporting the Signal in the process), just click on the Signal Store button. We promise only to peddle quality products we ourselves have purchased, or would purchase if only we had the money.

Santa Attends Lions Pancake Supper
Mathieu Mortensen poses for a picture with Santa.
The Skidmore-Tynan Lions Club held its 4th annual Pancake Supper with Santa Sunday, December 4th, at the Chisholm Trail Cafe. Dee LeCount, Lions Club member and proprietress of the cafe, volunteered her facility and her time to ensure the event was a success. Other Lions Club members helping serve meals included club president David Waishes, Buddy Duge, Gail Staples, Brittany Luna, Santana Lopez, and Keith Petrus.
The Lions sold over 40 plates to hungry customers, earning more than $200 for club charities. In the course of the evening, the Lions voted to donate $50 to the Immaculate Conception Church to assist in preparation of holiday food baskets.
Special thanks to Santa Claus for taking time from his busy holiday schedule to personally take gift requests from local children. It was noted that Santa has really trimmed his weight down lately - most likely due to recent improvements in dietary guidlines. When asked where his reindeer were, Santa replied "They're over at Dairy Queen having a Blizzard."

Stats Back Up Bobcat Pride
For those of you still feeling down after Saturday's season ending loss to Blanco, here are a few statistics Darryl Hudson gathered at the close of regular season play.
Mr. Hudson writes:
ST Bobcats are the 31-2A Champs - OUTRIGHT!! 1st time in 17 years. I would have thought this would at least get recognized in the news.
Josh Owen is the 2nd leading rusher in all 2A with 1173 yards in 107 carries. Rosenbaum from GW is 1st with 1306 in 155 per CC Caller Times last stats. Owen's average carry was 10.96 yard, which tops Rosebaum's 8.43 yards. Not to mention Owen also has 247 yards receiving on 18 receptions for an average of 13.72 yards to Rosenbaums 14 yards on 3 receptions for a 4.7 yard average. WHAT IF OWEN HAD CARRIED THE BALL MORE????
Jordan Haws is 2nd in passing in all 2A with 1043 yards in 74 completions on 132 attempts. Aparicio from Taft was 1st with 1182 yards in 93 completions on 188 attempts per CC Caller Times last stats. Haws had 56.1% completions and averaged 14.1 yards. Aparicio had 49.5% completions and averaged 12.7 yards. WHAT IF HAWS HAD THROWN MORE PASSES????
In all 2-A, ST also had Bubba Gonzales, the #7 rusher with 692 on 90 for carries (7.7 average) and Garrett Gonzales the #2 receiver with 321 on 20 receptions (16.1 average) per CC Caller Times last stats.
Team stats has ST 3rd in rushing with 2513 yards on 374 attempt to average 6.7 yards. GW was 1st with 2876 on 447 to average 6.4 yards and Banquete was 2nd with 2727 on 440 to average 6.2 yards. In passing, ST came in 2nd with Taft coming in 1st per CC Caller Times last stats. Again ST's average was on top.
Then on "D" Cory Markham according to Bay Area Sports Top 200 Defensive players, led tackles in South Texas 5A thru 1A schools with 142 Tackles 5 Sacks and 4 Fumble recoveries and John Boscamp came in 29th with 81 Tackles 1 Sack and 5 Fumble recoveries. Boscamp's 5 recoveries were the most listed for anyone in all 200 Tops defensive players. The CC Caller Times never even mentioned them.

Panthers End Bobcat Playoff Run
Ricky Gutierrez takes down a Panther running back with a flying tackle.
It turns out, as in nature, Panthers are just plain BIGGER than Bobcats. If Saturday's regional playoff game had been decided by size of character or size of heart, there might have been a different outcome. Unfortunately football is as much a game of brawn as it is brains, and at some point, sheer desire to win gives way to physical reality. That reality reared its ugly head Saturday afternoon in Seguin as the Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats fell 28-9 to their much larger Blanco opponents.
To their credit, our boys put up a valiant fight and gave Bobcat fans an exciting game to remember. Hope was kept alive well into the 4th quarter of play as the Bobcats trailed just 14-9 with 9 minutes left on the board. Two additional Panther TDs put the game firmly out of reach in the final minutes of the game. The Signal congratulates the Bobcats on a great season and an exciting finish.
Clint Isaacks vaults a Blanco defender in the final moments of the game.
Read more about the game in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times story Bobcats get grounded by the Panthers, and in the San Antonio Express News story Blanco sneaks into 2A state quarterfinals.

The FBI and CIA Don't Want to Talk To You
AT-RISK SYSTEMS:
PRIORITY: MODERATE
I'm getting occasional messages accusing me of going to illegal Web sites. They're supposedly from the FBI. Some are also from the CIA. Wow! Don't panic, visiting the Signal won't get you 20 to life.
I hope everybody realizes that they are fraudulent. If the FBI catches you doing something illegal, I doubt it will send you an email. Nonetheless, I'm seeing AV corporations swarmed from people who are trying to comply with the spam.
This email carries the Sober worm. It disables security settings on victims' computers. It also finds email addresses on the victims' computers and mails itself to everyone. That's why there's so much of this crud out there. For more Sober information and removal instructions, visit Symantec.
Don't open spam. Don't read it. And don't open attachments. Just delete the stuff. And keep your AV software up-to-date.

The Austin American Statesman Says...
"The key for Blanco is stopping Skidmore QB Jordan Haws, who burned Ganado last week for 200 passing yards and three total TDs. The Panthers are on a roll after a nice win over stingy Academy. Next: Lexington or Schulenburg."

Bobcats Beat Ganado - Advance in Playoffs
Celebrating another post-season victory.
The Bobcats got off to another slow start in Saturday's Area playoff game versus the Ganado Indians. Ganado was the first to put points on the board with a long drive in the 1st quarter. After a short unsuccessful drive of their own, the Bobcats finally started to turn things around with Josh Owen's interception and 18 yard run with just 50 seconds left in the 1st quarter.
Quarterback Jordan Haws hit Owen for a 41 yard reception at the top of the 2nd quarter as the Bobcats began to pick up steam. With 9:28 in the 2nd quarter, Haws' pass to Garrett Gonzales put the bocats on the board. The Cats received a lucky break when a "roughing the kicker" penalty gave them a second chance after a missed extra point kick. Josh Owen made the most of the opportunity with a successfull 2 point conversion to put the cats in the lead 8-7.
Ganado answered with another touchdown of their own but failed in their attempt at a 2 point conversion.
With 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, the Bobcats fumbled the ball and immediately got it back when Jeremy Johnson intercepted a Ganado pass. The Bocats continued to gather momentum as Trey Dodson made a spectacular catch on a Haws pass for a 40 yard gain. With less than a minute remaining in the 2nd quarter, Jordan Haws powered the ball into the end zone on a quarterback keeper, bringing the score to 14-13 at halftime.
The Bobcats shut out the Indians in the 2nd half of the ballgame. Josh Owen added another 6 points in the 3rd quarter with an "extra effort" run up the middle from inside the 10 yard line. Adam Aguilar's extra point kick took the score to 21-13 in favor of the Cats.
QB Jordan Haws found Garret Gonzales wide open in the end zone in the 4th quarter. With the extra point kick, the Bobcats took a commanding 28-13 lead. One of the more exciting touchdowns of the evening, Josh Owen's 4th quarter interception and subsequent 64 yard run into the end zone, was called back on a "blocking below the waist" penalty. Final score Bobcats 28 - Ganado 13.
Rob's Digital Photography was on hand to record the historic game. Check out Rob's Skidmore-Tynan Gallery for professional photos of the Ganado game and other S-T sporting events.
