Wallek Aids in Insurgent Capture, Awarded Purple Heart

Marine PFC Luke Wallek, grandson of Edwin & Jessie May Wallek recently was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat in Iraq. Edwin & Jessie May learned the news during a Christmas visit from their grandson and, on a happier note, report he was married in September.

The commendation is as follows:

For professional achievement as a machine gunner, Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 5, 1 Marine Expeditionary Force (forward) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07. In the Al Anbar province, Iraq. From January to August 2006.

Private First Class Wallek demonstrated proficiency, attention to detail, and initiative while serving in multiple gunner billets in “Alpha” section. His billets include gunner on the MK-19 automatic grenade launcher and gunner for the lead vehicle’s .50 Caliber machine gun, positions usually reserved for the most experienced machine gunners.

On 26 March 2006, Private First Class Wallek engaged a small enemy force attempting to emplace a roadside bomb, which resulted in their capture and detainment. He consistently performed his duties with outstanding proficiency and dedication to his unit. Private First Class Wallek’s outstanding initiative, perseverance and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Signed by P.G. Looney, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC, Commanding, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines.

A Warning to the Wise

Reeys Falcon informs the Signal that he recently had several items stolen from his home including a camera, family heirlooms, and other expensive items. "I didn't miss my camera until I started packing early November for my trip to Chicago," said Mr. Falcon. "The other things I discovered missing after my return."

Mr. Falcon plans to file a report with the Sheriff's office and wishes to warn other Skidmore residents that, even in our small community, there are those who wish to take advantage of the trust of others - especially the elderly. Said Mr. Falcon, "Since I came to Skidmore I have always felt so very safe and have never lost even a blade of grass. Then I try to be kind to someone in need and give them work, and this happened. It is totally bewildering."

If you have knowledge of this, or any other crime, please call Bee County Crime Stoppers at 597-0206. All calls are strictly confidential and you may receive a reward for information leading to a conviction.

Water Board Seeks Member Support in Changing Bylaws

In a letter, dated December 21, 2006, the Skidmore Water Supply Corporation announced a special meeting to be held at 2:00 p.m., January 9th, 2007. The purpose of the meeting is to amend the bylaws of the corporation to allow 10% of the membership to represent a quorum at annual meetings rather than 50% as is now required. To that end, SWSC is asking that members either attend the October 9 meeting to cast their vote, or return a proxy letter allowing SWSC Board Member Keith Petrus to vote on their behalf.

Why do the bylaws need to be changed? Back in October, SWSC held its annual meeting to elect or re-elect board members but was unable to do so legally because a relatively small number of SWSC members attended the 7:00 p.m. meeting. Since everyone who signs up for water or waste services becomes a member of the corporation, total membership is currently nearing 300. That means that close to 150 people would be required to vote in the Board election under the old rules. The proposed bylaw amendment would reduce the number of members required to a more realistic level.

Please note also that, should you decide to send in your proxy, it would only be used in voting on the issue stated above and would expire on the day following the amendment of the bylaws. Please call the Skidmore Water Supply Corporation at 287-3433 for additional information.

S-T Elementary Christmas Program Dedicated to Ed Brundrett

The littlest reindeer (Courtney Calderon) offers to help Santa (Caleb Davis) get unstuck from a chimney.

This year's annual S-T ISD Elementary Christmas Program drew record attendance. The Events Center auditorium was packed wall to wall Thursday, December 21st, as students from Kindergarten through 5th Grade entertained family, friends, and faculty with Christmas songs and skits. The program was dedicated to the late Edward P. Brundrett and was attended by his wife Henrietta and daughter Heidi.

The Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes kicked of program with If You Can't Wait for Christmas, Santa is His Name-O, and The Chipmunk Song. The 2nd and 3rd Grade classes performed Jolly Jingle Christmas, Santa is my Buddy, and Merry Christmas Time.

The grand finale of the evening was the performance of "The Littlest Reindeer" by 4th and 5th Grade students. Courtney Calderon performed the title role of the Littlest Reindeer. Santa was played by Caleb Davis with a supporting cast of Sadie Gibson as the Toy Doll, Sierra Young, Anthony Cantu, Courtney Cortez, Cody Leonard, and Kaci Moore as Elves, and finally, Santa's Reindeer played by Cameron Pace, Destiny Gutierrez, Sal Soto, Erica Coria, Marissa Aguero, Lauren Ramos, John Cirone, Rebekah Mendoza, and Elias Perez.

Elementary Principal, Tricia Vasquez, thanked the elementary teachers for their work in preparation for the program and presented a bouquet of flowers to Rita Burgess for her efforts in coordination of the annual event.

The cast of the play included Stephanie Schirmer as Mrs. Peabody, Cody Chambers as Mr. White, Jessica Cochran as Dr. Pilz, Whitney Bohac as Minnie, Lilly Hernandez as Mrs. Greer, Cody Coker as Mr. Butler, Tori O'Brien as Betteye, Jesse Pearce as Lenny, Stephanie Leal as Miss Wallabye, Jamie Burns as Miss Willingford, John Arrisola as Colonel Muthart, Miranda Bohac as Moxie, and Zach Petrus as Ronald Fitz-Charlton.

Paypal "Cancel Transaction" Scam

I received an alarming email this morning. It claimed my Paypal online bank account had been billed 699.99 by Wayne E. Bakewell of Brownsville, PA. The email included a helpful link to "CANCEL TRANSACTION." Thankfully, my suspicious nature kicked in and I decided to log into my Paypal account through a previous bookmark. Sure enough, there was no charge - just another attempt by a would be thief to steal my account information. NEVER NEVER NEVER click on the link included in any email claiming to be from your bank or online account. These links are included to lead you to a bogus site where you will be asked to CONFIRM your sensitive account password and other information. ALWAYS access your account by typing the address directly into your browser or through your own bookmark.

S-T HS Out-Drives Area Schools in Food Bank Donations

The Skidmore-Tynan High School Student Council led a school wide effort during the month of November to raise food for needy families of the Coastal Bend. 3,662.6 lbs of food was donated by students, teachers and administration. That was 13.42 pounds per student at S-T High school. This amount made the Skidmore-Tynan High School the largest contributor in the area, including Corpus Christi schools.

S-T High School students set goals in each class and worked hard to meet them. Friendly competition between classes helped motivate students to reach in their pockets and give that little bit extra.

Student Council representatives went to the KIII studios Thursday, December 7, 2006 to be interviewed on the 5:00 p.m. news and to receive a computer from a representative of the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. Students attending the interview were Secretary Tori O’Brien, President Reid O’Brien, Reporter Stephanie Leal, Representative Heather Cuevas, Historian Ricky Gutierrez, and Sponsors Lisa Janysek and Mary Mengers.

Skidmore Signal FAQ

Most websites that have been around for any length of time have a "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) section. It seems the Signal, having turned 3 years old just prior to this posting, has also reached that point.

First, a little about the Signal:

There are no professional journalists here. The Signal is a collaborative effort by unpaid local writers who graciously volunteer their time and talents to inform and hopefully entertain fellow citizens. We do our best to maintain a professional attitude but, as any English teacher can tell you, we are strictly amateurs! We hope you enjoy the Signal despite our shortcomings and we welcome suggestions to improve our little hometown paper.

And now... just the FAQs:

I keep seeing the same old newspaper at the convenience store. When does the new issue come out?

The Signal is not a traditional newspaper. We print just one issue per month and much of the content previously appeared on our website - a practice opposite that of traditional newspapers. You can generally expect to pick up the latest issue on or shortly after the 1st of each month.

Why doesn't the Signal post photos of my child's sporting events?

The Signal does not have a designated sports writer/photographer. This is most evident in our dismal coverage of girls' sporting events (the publisher has two sons at S-T HS). This said, we welcome anyone who would like to submit game reports or photos.

Why does the Signal post some local obituaries, but not others?

The Signal relies on reports from local funeral homes and readers for information about deaths in our community. If you don't see it published in the Signal, it's because no one sent us a copy of the obituary.

I posted a comment to the Signal and it did not show up. What's up with that?

All comments posted to the Signal are moderated. In other words, nothing gets posted to the Signal without first being approved by the publisher. This may mean a delay of minutes, hours, or even days. Be patient. If your comment does not get posted to the Signal, it was either lost in transfer or deleted due to inappropriate language or content. In some cases, questionable comments are deleted "just to be on the safe side."

Where can I pick up a copy of the Signal?

The Signal is currently being distributed in Skidmore at the, Chisholm Trail Cafe, Dalia's Cafe, Kwik Pantry, Lucky Horseshoe Saloon, and Papas Market. In Beeville, you can pick up a copy at Taqueria Vallarta. For postal delivery, a one-year subscription to the Signal (12 issues) is $15.00. Send your check, money order, or I.O.U. to P.O. Box 556, Skidmore, Texas 78389.

How much does it cost to advertise in the Signal?

Have you ever seen one of those TV commercials where the guys says "We must be crazy to sell for so low"? Well, that's what it's really like here at the Signal. Our advertising doesn't even cover the cost of printing. Email the Signal at ads@skidmoresignal.com for an advertising rate sheet.

CBC Dual Credit Like Free Tuition

High school students can earn college credits tuition free.

The Coastal Bend College dual credit program enables high school students to earn college credit while completing their high school requirements. Dual credit courses fulfill both college and high school requirements.

Dual credits earn students credit that may be applied toward a college degree or certificate. Bee County residents can take classes at Coastal Bend College at no cost while still in high school. In most cases, students will take courses at the college or online.

Benefits of the dual credit program include learning how to study for college, demonstrating the ability to do college-level work, gaining confidence needed to succeed in college and exploring possible majors.

Students can take English, history, biology, economics, government, kinesiology and sociology. Art, computer science, business and technical courses are also available. Students can enroll now for Spring 2007. Online registration and enrollment continues through Jan. 12.

Academic courses meet general education requirements in most degree plans at Texas colleges and universities. Workforce Education courses are credited toward associate’s degrees in applied sciences.

Students must be eligible to take dual credit courses. The basic criteria follows:
  • Student must be in the eleventh or twelfth grade.
  • Student must pass the TAKS section of the subject needed for enrollment.
  • Student must achieve minimum prerequisite scores on THEA, ACCUPLACER, ACT, SAT, ASSET or TAKS exams.
  • Student must supply the college with an official high school transcript.
  • Student must receive official permission from a high school counselor and principal in order to register a course.
  • A course articulation agreement between the college and the student's school must be on file for each course enrolled.
  • Student must apply and be accepted for admission into the college.
  • Course fees must be paid each semester.
  • Course syllabus will be that of the college.
  • Textbooks used must be college level and approved by the college.
  • No financial aid, other than the installment payment plan, is available for high school students.
For more information on dual credit, contact Alma C. Adamez, dual credit coordinator at 354-2280 or by e-mail at adamez@coastalbend.edu.

Change in Signal Comments Policy

After considerable thought, I have decided that I will no longer allow critical comments of any kind on the Skidmore Signal website. Deciding which comments are appropriate for the Signal's multi-age audience has become too much of a strain on my time and sanity.

I also believe that, due to my unique position as an S-T ISD Trustee, critical comments posted to the Signal website have resulted in mistrust among my fellow board members and impacted my ability to serve the District effectively. I regret being forced to take this action as I believe strongly in freedom of expression. I encourage those of you who wish to have your voices heard to do so through traditional local media. -- Keith Petrus

Community Voices Support for S-T ISD Superintendent Belmarez

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Skidmore-Tynan ISD was held Monday, November 13, 2006 in the S-T ISD Cafetorium. An overflow crowd forced the meeting from its normal place in the District's board room.

Community members taking the podium in the Public Comment portion of the meeting included John R. Scott, Joe Henry Hanus, Mattie Hicks, Thomas Mengers, Dan Christian, John Salinas, Daren Wilder, Terri Hall, and Alice Gonzales. In general, the speakers expressed concern about recent and pending board actions and voiced support of the District's Superintendent and administrative staff. Coach John Salinas asked that the board and community focus on positive developments within the District. "Negative talk affects the kids," said Coach Salinas adding "The last three years at S-T ISD have been the best in my 13 years of employment by the District." Speaker Daren Wilder agreed that S-T ISD has one of the best school systems in the area. "We have an excellent Superintendent, administration, and staff," stated Mr. Wilder, "Please put aside personal agendas and do the right thing." S-T ISD students, Cory Markham and Kristina Cavazos, also spoke in public forum on behalf of a group of fellow students voicing support for District Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez.

Two items involving consultation with the District's legal counsel regarding Superintendent's contractual "terms of employment" and a possible FERPA Department of Education complaint and investigation were pulled from the meeting agenda for lack of timely filing.

The board took action on the following items:
  • Consideration and Possible Approval of DAEP Contract with Beeville ISD. This item was approved by unanimous vote.
  • Consideration and Possible Approval to Pay Bills for Legal Services. This item involved payment for legal services rendered by the District's attorney who, in a previous board meeting, was directed to communicate with the Texas State Attorney General's office regarding an ongoing investigation. This item was approved by a 4-2 vote with Mr. Haggard and Mr. Petrus dissenting.
  • Consideration and Possible Approval of Second Reading and Adoption of Updated (Local) Policy 78. After discussion of the merits of one section of the new policy regarding administrative authority to make employee "pay grade" adjustments, this item was approved by unanimous vote.
  • Consideration and Possible Discussion to take Action on Declaration of Surplus Property -Tractor (Mr. Rick Olivares). The board voted unanimously to remove the tractor from the list of surplus property as recommended by administration.

A scheduled closed session item, Discussion and Consideration on Initiating an Independent Investigation on the Breach of Security/Theft of Internet Based Passwords as reported by the Superintendent of Schools to the Board of Trustees. (Mr. Ysrael Salinas), was pulled from the agenda.
