Save The Internet
Congress is now pushing a law that would end the free and open Internet as we know it. Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. So Amazon doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer.
Many members of Congress take campaign contributions from these companies, and they don't think the public are paying attention to this issue. Let's show them we care - please sign this petition today. MoveOn.org Civic Action: Save The Internet. For more in-depth information see www.savetheinternet.com

Judge Jimmy Martinez Calls for Exxon-Mobil Boycott
KRIS-TV 6 reports that on Monday, the county commissioner's court voted 4-1 to pass a resolution that urged folks to stop buying gasoline from Exxon-Mobil on May 1, and not to buy it again, until the price drops to a $1.309
County Judge Jimmy Martinez said the boycott has to work. He believes if people don't buy Exxon gas, then Exxon is forced to lower its price and the other companies are forced to follow. But others believe it's just not that simple.
Bee County has three Exxon stations - all owned by the same local company. That company told 6 News the only impact an Exxon boycott would have would be on their profits from the sale of food and merchandise, which makes up for about a third of their sales.

It Could Never Happen to Me...
A family in Mathis is having to face the music after one of their children had her Internet activity was traced. KRIS-TV 6 carries the full story:
04.22.2006 - Family learns they're being sued by music industry [KRIS-TV ]
The girl was using Peer-to-Peer networking software, also known as P2P, to illegally share music and other media online. Among Kazaa mentioned in the article, a comprehensive list of P2P software can be found on Wikipedia.
As stressed in one of the Tech Talk articles a couple months ago, the argument of "It could never happen to me" is no longer a valid safeguard. I don't entirely agree with the restriction of new DRM technologies, but following the rules is the lesser of two evils compared to being sued for $3,000+ dollars.

"The Hardest Goodbye"
Driving through Mathis on the way back from Tuesday's Varsity baseball game in Banquete, we noticed red, white, and blue ribbons on virtually every signpost and tree along the roadside. Nancy Crouch of Skidmore's Variety Shop informs the Signal that the ribbons were placed in honor of 21-year old Cpl. Andres "A.J." Aguilar Jr. who died in Iraq on April 2, 2006. "A.J." had lived in Mathis as a child and has many family members in the area. Read more about his service and ultimate sacrifice to his country in The hardest goodbye, courtesy of the Victoria Advocate.

Texas Baptist Men Conduct South America Disaster Training
Reverend Lee Bevly (on right) at the famous statue of "Christ the Redeemer" in Brazil.
Reverend Lee Bevly of the Skidmore Baptist Church recently traveled to Brazil as part of a team of eight Texas Baptist Men (TBM) who were invited by the Brazilian government to share information on TBM's disaster relief efforts.
The men split in to two groups, each of which visited two cities, spending seven days in each from March 10th to 25th. Lee Bevly was a part of the team who went to the capital, Brazilia, the first week and Rio de Jeneiro the second. Their trip was a resounding success with representatives from several neighboring countries attending the week long training session.
As you can see by the photo above, they took the opportunity to go to the "Christ the Redeemer" statue. Brother Lee says they were treated like "royalty" and adds that Brazil is a beautiful country. "I feel blessed to have been asked to attend and take part in such an historical event" said Rev. Bevly. "God is at work around us, in every country." -- Submitted by Cindi Bevly
