Wallace Qualifies for World's Largest Junior High Rodeo

Skidmore-Tynan Junior High 8th-Grade student Hudson Wallace has earned a position on the Texas state Wrangler Junior High rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Gallup, New Mexico from June 28th thru July 4th to compete at the 5th Annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo (WJHFR) in Tie-Down Calf Roping.

Hudson is the son of Trey & Roberta Wallace of George West, Texas and Clyde & Kristen Evons of Katy, Texas.

Jack Wilkinson 1925-2009

Jack Wilkinson, 83, of Skidmore, Texas, passed away June 21, 2009 at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Smithville, Texas. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Mr. Wilkinson was born on April 13, 1926 in Sinton, Texas; the son of the late Volney and Ouida Wilkinson. On November 10, 1956, he married Julie Ann Doubrava in Sinton, Texas. In life, Jack Wilkinson enjoyed hunting, working with horses and cattle and spending time with his family. He worked for “Hall and Maples” as a Bull Dozer Operator. In 1956, he began his career with the “San Patricio Electric Co-op” in Sinton, Texas, where he worked for the next 32 years until his retirement on April 13, 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Ann Wilkinson of Skidmore, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Jackie and Karl Burris of Smithville, Texas; Sister Marjorie (Nell) Bohac and her husband Allen Bohac of Skidmore, Texas; and sister Bernice Gressett and her husband Jimmy Gressett of Aransas Pass, Texas as well as several Nieces and Nephews. Mr. Wilkinson was preceeded in death by his father, mother, 3 sisters and a brother.

Services were held Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home in Beeville with interment at Evergreen Cemetery in Skidmore, Texas. Pallbearers were Emil Doubrava, Thomas Doubrava, Ricky Bohac, Joe Cramer, John Cramer and Frankie White.

Gonzales Celebrate 50th Anniversary


Mr. and Mrs. Laugro Y Gonzales celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 14th. The couple was honored by family members with a dinner and a dance at the Chick-a-Saw. Laugro and Lupe Gonzales are blessed with 8 children, 23 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

CBC Hosts Cougar Camp for Incoming Freshmen

Coastal Bend College Beeville Campus Cougar Camp will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for incoming freshmen from all campuses. Cougar Camp includes free meals during camp; workshops; prizes and giveaways; and activities. New students will get an opportunity to meet CBC faculty and staff and register early for fall classes.

Participants must complete a Cougar Camp Application before July 7. Available with high school counselors, Coastal Bend College, or online at www.uhv.edu/titlev. Participants must be enrolling at Coastal Bend College (any campus) for the Fall 2009 semester.

FBC Vacation Bible School

S-T ISD Once Again on Track for Recognized Status

Preliminary unofficial results indicate that the District will repeat its “Recognized” status, the High school and Junior High campuses will be “Recognized,” and the elementary campus will receive the state’s highest rating of “Exemplary.”

100% of Skidmore-Tynan students in grades six, eight, nine and ten passed the reading TAKS test for 2009. 91% of third graders, 95% of fourth graders and 94% of fifth grade students met passing standard for reading at the elementary level. Grades seven and eleven did equally well with 92% of seventh and 98% of eleventh graders mastering the reading test. The district passing rate for reading was 97%.

District math scores showed positive gains in most grade levels. At the elementary level all grades showed positive gains with 89% of third graders passing, 100% of fourth graders passing and 94% of fifth graders passing the test. S-TISD junior high sixth graders had 67% passing, while grades seven and eight showed improvement over last years scores with 82% passing at the seventh grade level while 90% of eight graders mastered the 2009 test. Two out of three high school grades tested showed improvement over last year’s math scores. 67% of ninth grade, 80% of tenth grade and 95% of eleventh grade met math passing standards. The district passing rate for math was 85%.

Science scores across the district were very strong. 94% of fifth graders, 83% of eighth graders, 77% of tenth graders and 96% of eleventh grade students met the science passing standard. The district passing rate for Science was 89%.

Social studies stayed strong with 100% passing in both tenth and eleventh grades, respectively, while 94% of eight grade students met the passing standard. The district passing rate for social studies was 98%

98% of fourth and seventh graders mastered the writing test. The district passing rate for writing was 98%.

School officials are very proud of the effort put forth by S-TISD students and the school district family. The S-TISD school district community continues and improves its tradition of academic excellence.

S-TISD Announces Summer Athletic Conditioning Schedule

Summer conditioning for all incoming 7th grade through 12th grade boys and girls is open from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. thru 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the rest of the summer except for Tuesday evenings because of the 7 on 7 football league. Quarterback school is from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for quarterbacks in grades 7-12. -- Submitted by S-TISD Athletics Director Adam Arroyo.

Mark your Calendar for S-T ISD All School Reunion

Preparations are underway for a Skidmore-Tynan Open Class Reunion to be held at the Tynan Recreation Hall on October 24, 2009. The planning committee has agreed on the following details: There will be no written invitations. News of the reunion will be passed by word of mouth, email, school websites, and press releases to local newspapers. There will be no reserved seating and guests are encouraged to come early and stay late! Please bring along photos, albums, and memorabilia for display at the reunion. A catered barbecue meal will be served. Beer, sodas, and water will be available for purchase at an open bar operated by the Tynan Hall. Music will be furnished by Steve Sugarek

Volunteers will be needed to help with serving, hosting, and other activities. Anyone interested in card games, dominos, horse shoes, or volleyball may gather a group to organize the activity. BBQ Fundraiser Sunday

The Skidmore Volunteer Fire Department will hold a barbecue fundraiser Sunday, June 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Skidmore Fire Station on 4th and Refugio Street. Plates are $7.00 and include brisket, sausage, potato salad, tea or coffee, dessert, and all the fixings.
