S-TISD Tax Rate Approved

Voters voiced overwhelming support for the proposed S-TISD tax rate in Friday's special election. Ballots cast in favor of the new tax rate totaled 218 to 120 against. Similar measures were defeated in Pettus and Beeville. With approval of the proposed rate, S-TISD will receive an estimated 280,000 in state matching funds and avoid forced budget cuts to programs and personnel.

Future Bobcat Shines in Pee Wee Football League

It must run in the family. Andrew Casarez, brother of Bobcat varsity fullback and linebacker Joe Manuel Casarez, had a breakout year playing in Beeville's Pop Warner football league. The Skidmore-Tynan 6th grader scored 20 touchdowns and rushed for over 1200 yards – leading the team to the Regional Championships.

Andrew played with Beeville's Mighty Mites his first three years - making the championships each year but not quite claiming the title. In 2007, Andrew played for the Junior Pee Wee team that advanced to the state quarter finals only to lose 8-0 to an Austin team in a hard-fought defensive battle. This year, Andrew's team won the South Texas Pee Wee Championship game against the Corpus Christi Sharks 22-18 in George West. The team advanced to the Regional playoffs where they were defeated 25-23 by the previously unscored-upon North McAllen Chargers. Andrew scored all three touchdowns in the game, one of which was a 90 yard run.

The coaches for the Beeville championship Pee Wee team were: head coach Val Amador, assistant coaches Joe Casarez, Greg Cuevas, Jeremy Cuevas, Ruben Cuevas, Mitch Eliott, Orlando Gonzales, Aldo Morin, Joe Morin, Joe Trevino, and Rico Martinez.

S-T ISD Budget Hinges on Successful Tax Rate Election

Skidmore-Tynan ISD urges voters to vote "Yes" in the December 5th, 2008 Tax Ratification Election. The proposed 16¢ reduction in the debt service tax rate in 2008 combined with a 6¢ increase in the maintenance and operations tax rate will result in an overall 10¢ rate reduction. Voting “Yes” on the tax ratification election equals saying “Yes” to a 10¢ reduction in your tax rate. Taxes for seniors and those with disability exemptions are not affected by the new rate because their tax rate is frozen.

If the Tax Ratification Election fails, the District will lose an estimated 280,000 in state matching funds and be forced to cut budgets, programs, personnel and/or dip into emergency reserves by an estimated $355,000.

Click here to view a statement from S-T ISD Trustees supporting a "Yes" vote in the Tax Rate Election.

Early voting for the December 5th, 2008 Tax Ratification Election continues through December 1st from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the S-TISD Administrative Board Room. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day, Friday, December 5th.

S-TISD Celebrates Homecoming

Mr. Garcia assists in the annual lighting of the S-T. Click here for more S-T Lighting Ceremony photos (look under 2008 Bobcat Football).

Homecoming week festivities at S-T ISD are well underway as Friday's first District football game vs. Taft approaches. One of the highlights of homecoming week is the "Lighting of the S-T" at Bobcat Stadium. The event is made possible each year by Mr. Garcia's agricultural science students who are responsible for construction of the giant S-T.

Festivities continue right up to game time with recognition of "The Greats of the Eights" in which alumni from each graduating class ending in "8" receive free admission to Friday's game (plus one guest).

Special recognition will be given to the Skidmore-Tynan ISD's very first graduating class of 1948-09, members of which included: J.C. Beyer, Judy Beyer, Alvin Boldt, Melba Bremer, Annie Mae Doubrava, James Duge, Lucille Finke, Joyce Gregorczyk, Leona Lamprecht, Maurine Mattingly, G.A. Neill, Bill Ross, and Don Rylant.

The cheerleaders were out earlier this week decorating area businesses.

Class of 1948-49 Invited to Homecoming for "Greats of the Eights" Celebration

The Skidmore-Tynan Independent School District will celebrate 60 years of existence during Homecoming week, ending with the football game against Taft on October 10, 2008. In celebration of its first 60 years, the District would like to recognize the “Greats of The Eights”.

In looking back over the years, S-TISD has seen many great students go through its system. That is why we are inviting the community and all grads to come and celebrate 60 years in our pregame activities which will include recognizing those students who graduated in 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008. If you graduated in one of the “Greats of the Eights” years your admission into the game will be free as well as 2 additional family members. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ALL GRADUATES ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN US, not just the “eights!”

A SPECIAL INVITATION GOES TO THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS FROM THE 1948-49 SCHOOL YEAR!

We welcome any group who would like to gather before or after the game and visit about the old times. Please inform the school district if your group would like a place to visit before or after the game.

S-TISD appreciates graduates who have placed their confidence in our school and have been loyal to their alma mater. Please let us take this special time to pay tribute to your part in the District’s success.

If you have any requests for special accommodations or if your class wishes to have a special seating area at the ballgame, please contact Dr. Brett Belmarez at 361-287-3426.
