The Bobcats suffered a narrow loss to the Bulldogs Friday night in Three Rivers. The Cats battled into the 4th quarter before finally allowing the Three Rivers Bulldogs to score. A promising drive late in 4th was driven back by a series of back-to-back penalties. The final score was 7-0 as Three Rivers continues to deny opponents access to the endzone.

Elsewhere in the District, Freer beat Taft 41-14, George West blanked Odem 31-0, and Orange Grove defeated Banquete 28-7.

Bobcats Prevail in JV "Shootout"

J.D. White takes the ball in for Bobcat touchdown.

On Thursday night the Bobcat J.V. football team was involved in a thriller against the Three Rivers Bulldogs. “Shoot Out” is the best phrase to describe the Bobcat’s 36-30 victory.

An enormous amount of credit goes to the offensive line’s dominating performance. Outstanding job: Kyle Wilson (T), Joe Torres (GD), John Scott (C), Brad Butler (GD), Donato Salinas (T), and Rene Jimenez (TE). The 36 points scored included 2 touchdowns by Manny Flores, 2 by J.D. White, and 1 by Zach Mengers.

The Bobcat’s victory was attained in large part as a result of an onside kick recovered by Brandon Smith with just over 5 minutes left in the game. At that point the Bobcats were down 30-28, and the ensuing drive led to the winning score. Captains for the game were Robert Hernandez, Javier Barrientes, George Garcia, and Zach Mengers. -- Submitted by S-T ISD Athletics Director Adam Arroyo.

JV Bobcats Narrowly Defeated by Mathis JV Squad

Thursday the Skidmore-Tynan Bobcat Junior Varsity suffered their first loss of the season in what turned out to be a defensive battle. The final score between the Mathis Pirates Junior Varsity and the Bobcats was 14-6.

The Bobcats kicked off to start the game and the Pirates moved the ball down the field on a 65 yard scoring drive. The Bobcat defense was able to prevent the Pirates from converting the 2 point conversion. On their first two offensive possessions the Bobcats moved the ball both on the ground and through the air, but failed to score when they entered the red zone on both occasions as a result of fumbles. However the Bobcat defense held strong and the score was Mathis 6 Skidmore 0 at halftime. During the second half the Bobcats scored on a 9 yard reception by #30 J.D. White. During a Bobcat 2 point conversion attempt the Pirate defense intercepted a pass and ran it back for 2 points. Both the Bobcat offense and defense continued to fight hard in what ended up being a 14-6 defeat.

Captains for the game were #12 Zach Mengers, #20 Rene Jimenez, #30 J.D. White, and #70 Donato Salinas. -- Submitted by S-TISD Athletics Director Adam Arroyo.

1948-2008, S-TISD Celebrates
60 Years of Education

The Skidmore-Tynan Independent School District will celebrate 60 years of existence during Homecoming week, ending with the football game against Taft on October 10, 2008. In celebration of its first 60 years, the District would like to recognize the “Greats of The Eights”.

In looking back over the years, S-TISD has seen many great students go through its system. That is why we are inviting the community and all grads to come and celebrate 60 years in our pregame activities which will include recognizing those students who graduated in 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008. If you graduated in one of the “Greats of the Eights” years your admission into the game will be free as well as 2 additional family members. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ALL GRADUATES ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN US, not just the “eights!”

We welcome any group who would like to gather before or after the game and visit about the old times. Please inform the school district if your group would like a place to visit before or after the game.

S-TISD appreciates graduates who have placed their confidence in our school and have been loyal to their alma mater. Please let us take this special time to pay tribute to your part in the District’s success.

If you have any requests for special accommodations or if your class wishes to have a special seating area at the ballgame, please contact Dr. Brett Belmarez at 361-287-3426.

Coach Arroyo informs the Signal of a change in venue for Thursday's junior varsity football game. The game will be played at 6:00 p.m. in Mathis to accommodate the resurfacing of the track at Bobcat Stadium. The resurfacing is expected to take 5 days, during which time the stadium will be closed to visitors.

Sports Pics - Bobcats Vs. Badgers

Adam Perez recovers a Badger fumble and runs it in for a Bobcat TD.

In a game that was plagued by injuries, the Bobcats fell to the Bishop Badgers 19-8 in the varsity football season opener at Bobcat Stadium. Senior defensive tackle Matt Hernandez was taken away by ambulance midway through the first quarter after suffering an injury to his ribcage. Senior wide receiver Zach Hall was taken to the hospital at halftime with a suspected concussion. Add to this the fact that Cody Chambers, senior linebacker, missed the start of the season with a broken collarbone and it's no wonder the Cats suffered a loss on opening day.
