S-T Artist Lisa Guerra Earns State Title and Superior Recognition

Lisa Guerra competed in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event STATE Competition on April 15th and 16th in Houston at the University of Houston in Clear Lake. She was among 48 regional state finalists from the South Texas area. Among these finalists, less than 10 received the State Title and Superior Recognitition! Lisa was one of those! There were about 2,000 competitors from all across Texas that competed for this title and less than 600 people earned recognition. Lisa was also the ONLY 2A student to win in our region! Lisa's painting, "Art is Music to the Eyes" is on display in the Skidmore-Tynan Library. Be sure to check it out and congratulate Lisa on winning STATE, and being the only to ever do this in Skidmore! Let's continue the tradition! -- Submitted by S-T Art Instructor, Cal Garcia.

They don't make much bigger baseball fans than Skidmore's own Louis Arrisola. In addition to helping coach his son John's Little League baseball team, Mr. Arrisola is also a big fan of Corpus Christi's new "Hooks" baseball franchise. His overnight quest for tickets to the Hooks season opener earned him mention in not one - but two recent write-ups in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. "Fan camps out for some of remaining reserved tickets for Hooks' opener" and "A whole new ballgame."

We Do Like Green Eggs and Ham!

Elementary students listen as NHS member Stephanie Schirmer reads a Dr. Seuss classic.

The Signal can report with some authority that despite their initial shock value, green eggs and ham are indeed just as tasty as normal eggs and ham (although a few children refused to eat them regardless). Members of the S-T National Honor Society spent Saturday morning entertaining elementary students with various "Dr. Suess Day" activities. High School classrooms were transformed into play centers for the event featuring movies, books, and art & crafts related to the writings of Theodor Seuss Geisel. As near as we can tell, everyone involved, both big and small, had a wonderful time.

CC Ballet to Perform "Sleeping Beauty" at A.C. Jones High School

Corpus Christi Ballet is pleased to present the classic ballet “Sleeping Beauty” in the A. C. Jones High School Auditorium Friday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. The presentation is a gift to the community by the Joe Barnhart Foundation. This famous fairy tale will come alive with a cast of more than 100 dancers and actors in elaborate costumes. The dances create an atmosphere of fairy tale magic that brings the audience into a mystical world where spells are cast and fairy tale characters dance to Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music, creating a magical evening you won’t want to miss. Dancing the roles of Princess Aurora and her Prince are exciting principal dancers Alexandra Trevino and renowned Russian dancer, Konstantin Kolotov.

The wicked Fairy Carabosse, dramatically portrayed by the gifted April Michels, challenges the all-powerful Lilac Fairy, performed by the talented Shannon Cruz. The story unfolds when the Lilac fairy comes to the aide of a handsome prince and good finally triumphs over evil. A great celebration takes place in the palace and all are invited to witness the wedding of Princess Aurora and her Prince. Fairy tale characters like Puss in Boots, the White Cat, a pair of Bluebirds and Red Riding Hood and the Wolf join in the festivities.

“The Sleeping Beauty ballet is the most beloved of all the classical ballets. The artistry and entertainment value is as appreciated today as it was a hundred years ago”, stated Corpus Christi Ballet board president, Brad Condit. Corpus Christi Ballet is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing outstanding professional ballet productions for the South Texas community. Corpus Christi Ballet has educated, entertained and enthralled its audiences with performances that have made South Texas culturally rich.

Admission is $8 at the door for all adults. Students through high school age will be admitted free. Proceeds from door sales will help the Beeville Concert Association, which has made the arrangements for the performance, to bring future events to Beeville. However, the program is not included on the BCA concert season tickets.

Annual Spring Rabies Clinic

Protect your pets at a discount price Saturday, April 9th, at the Skidmore Fire Station at the corner of 4th and Refugio Street. Rabies shots are $5 and combination shots are just $10. Clinic hours are 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

BCA Presents Gershwin Musical Comedy

“Until Gershwin Do Us Part,” a musical comedy featuring the best songs of George and Ira Gershwin, will be presented by the Beeville Concert Association Sunday, April 10 at 3:00 pm at the Gertrude R. Jones Performing Arts Auditorium at Coastal Bend College.

Performers Steven Bull, Byrd Bonner, Sherry Houston, Linda McNeil and Bonnie Victor-Fried, are college chums together at a wedding. The situation calls for them to sing many of the Gershwins’ best-known songs, as well as some the audience is probably not familiar with. The result is a delightful, funny performance.

Bonner has a local connection—he’s married to the former Patty Riggle, a Bee County native. McNeil and Victor-Fried, friends of local travel agent Darlene Conoly, sang a concert of Broadway favorites last year for the BCA.

Admission is $6 for adults who do not hold BCA season tickets. Students through high school age are admitted free, as are CBC students with their ID’s.
