Skidmore FBC Youth Assist in Hurricane Reconstruction

Left to right back row: Santos Gaiton, Jason Gay, Ty White, Josh Chambers, Jared Wilkinson, R.J. Howard, Jessica Stephenson, Marcos Sanchez, Cody Chambers, Cyndi Bevly, and Pastor Lee Bevly, Jr. Left to right front row: Youth Pastor Rickey Roman, Rosie Roman, Johnny Alexander, Shauna Stephenson, and J.D. White.

The Skidmore First Baptist Youth Group returned from a Mission Trip to Vidor, TX where they worked with the Nehemiah’s Vision in an effort to help rebuild the surrounding area damaged from the 2005 Hurricane Rita.

Nehemiah’s Vision is a non profit 501(c) 3 organization formed by five businessmen from southeast Texas with a vision to share the love of God in practical ways by assisting in the recovery efforts in future crises elsewhere. Their primary goals are to assist in this effort with the uninsured and underinsured homeowners and churches – those unable to take care of these needs by themselves (www.nehemiahsvision.com).

Almost 100 youth all over south and east Texas worked together to help rebuild homes destroyed by the hurricane. The youth groups helped families by shingling roofs, building porches, painting homes, rebuilding rooms and more. In the five days they worked, eleven projects were completed and 22 homes re-tarped.

These young people learned how to be a servant for the Lord and to be a helping hand to those in need. The lives of people living in Vidor were touched by the generosity of these Texas youth who took time out of their summer to help hurricane victims rebuild.

Skidmore Methodists Lead by Example

Forty of the 346 Southwest Texas congregations had paid their 2006 apportionments in full as of June 30. Skidmore United Methodist Church led the list. The 54-member congregation had paid 104 percent of its share of expenses for ministries across the state, nation and world. -- "40 UM congregations pay ’06 apportionments in full" - United Methodist Witness, July 14, 2006

Apportioned Funds Enable United Methodists to Do Together What No Church, District or Annual Conference Could Do Alone.

We believe giving is an act of worship. We believe giving is, as 2 Corinthians 9:15, NRSV, teaches, our way of saying "Thanks be to God" for the most generous gift of all…our Lord Jesus Christ. John Wesley and his followers saw our work in the simplest terms. To paraphrase his inspiring words: "Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can."

We United Methodists follow in Wesley's footsteps, supporting one another and helping God's children whenever and wherever we can. One way we accomplish this task is through our apportioned funds, a method of giving that proportionally allocates the general church budget to conferences (which subsequently apportion to local churches). This method of giving has become a strong, generous tradition and a personal, lifelong commitment.

Together, through our connected congregations, we United Methodists accomplish what no single church, district or annual conference ever could hope to do. In this way, each individual, each family, each congregation gives a fair share for the church's work. We combine our prayers, presence, gifts and service to make a significant difference in the lives of God's people…in every place we can…as often as we can.

The seven apportioned funds include: World Service Fund, Ministerial Education Fund, Africa University Fund, Black College Fund, Interdenominational Cooperation Fund, Episcopal Fund, and General Administration Fund.

S-T ISD Trustees Approve New Junior High School Principal

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Skidmore-Tynan ISD was held July 24, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. in the S-T ISD Board Room.

Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez reported on the deteriorating state of the foundation of the old High School Gym. Due to rotted support structures beneath the northeast portion of the gymnasium, Dr. Belmarez has chosen to declare the entire gymnasium off limits to students pending repair of the damage. Dr. Belmarez further reported changes in TASB windstorm insurance coverage, continued progress on facilities improvements, and news of an Attorney General's Office ongoing investigation into alleged voting improprieties during the last school board election.

S-T ISD Business Manager Carole Estes reported the District had received a Superior Achievement rating for the 4th consecutive year. Dr. Belmarez noted that Mrs. Estes' positive assessment of the report was an understatement and that she was to be commended for her excellent work on behalf of the District.

Action items addressed in the meeting included:

Consideration and Possible Approval of TASB Delegate for the 2006 TASA/TASB Annual Convention. Trustees designated Daniel Gonzales as the TASB Convention delegate with Rick Olivares as alternate.

Consideration and Possible Action to Renew Administrators Contracts. (Mr. Keith Petrus) This item was tabled by a 6-1 vote with Keith Petrus dissenting.

Consideration and Possible Action on Manner in Which Closed Session Meetings are Recorded. (Mr. Keith Petrus) A proposal to tape record closed-session meetings as allowed by board policy failed by a 5-2 vote with Keith Petrus and Ken Haggard dissenting.

Consideration and Possible Approval to Pay Bill for Legal Services. This item was approved.

Consideration and Possible Approval of Personnel Recommendation(s). Trustees approved the hiring of Junior High Principal Emilia Dominguez, formerly employed by Beeville ISD.

The next meeting of the S-T ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled Monday, August 14, 2006 at 6:00 p.m.

Summer Ball

Tyler Wallek of the "Hoosier Daddies" knocks one out of the park. It would have been a grand slam if an earlier wild pitch had not allowed a runner to score from 3rd base.

School may be out for summer but that doesn't mean current and former S-T athletes are sitting around doing nothing. Many have signed up for Babe Ruth and adult baseball leagues. The "Hoosier Daddies" are back together, playing a double header Sunday in the Rockport League. Skidmore, Beeville, and George West players ages 13-15 will play in the State Babe Ruth Tournament in Del Rio on the weekend of the 21st. Look for more photos in the upcoming print edition of the Skidmore Signal.
