S-T ISD Trustees Vote to Consult School Attorney in AG Investigation

A Special Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Skidmore-Tynan ISD was held Monday, September 18, 2006, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the S-T ISD Board Room.

The specially called meeting addressed a single action item:

• Action to retain school's legal counsel to communicate with the Attorney General's office regarding any and all matters on alleged investigation regarding Skidmore-Tynan ISD's Board members and staff. (Mr. Rick Olivares)

Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez repeatedly advised Trustees against using public funds for what he viewed as a private legal matter. After much discussion, a motion to retain the District's attorney was made by board president Rick Olivares and seconded by Daniel Gonzales. The motion passed by a 4-2 vote with Ken Haggard and Keith Petrus dissenting.

The next regular meeting of the S-T ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled at 6:00 p.m., Monday, October 9, 2006.

Storms Soak Bee County

Monday morning view of the Aransas River west of Highway 181.

The storm that briefly knocked out power and water to Skidmore residents caused other minor damage around Skidmore. Pavement collapses in several locations were attributed to the recent installation of public sewer lines. 3 1/2 inches of rain fell over the course of Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

A dead tree, possibly struck by lightning, fell on this truck on East Patricio Street.

Residents checking their mail had to maneuver around a large sinkhole near the post office.

Aransas Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Aransas River at Skidmore. Lightning Cause of Water Pumping Station Failure

At approximately 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening, the Skidmore-Water Supply Corporation suffered a perfect storm of events leading to the temporary loss of water to Skidmore residents. First reports are that lightning tripped a fuse at 1st and Main Streets leading to a "phase loss" at the pumping station. For reasons yet to be determined the station back-up generator failed to kick in. As of this report, power has been restored to the station and the pumps are being primed to return water service to SWSC members.

Found Dog: Dachshund

This little guy has been running loose in our neighborhood for the last week or so. He had no collar but looks too clean and healthy to be a stray so we believe someone out there may be looking for him.

Pending location of his original owner, we've been tossing around possible names. The current favorite is "Zoidberg." Other suggestions include: Jack (as in Captain Jack Sparrow), Heath, Barkley, Douuuug, Oscar, Fry, Edgar, Chuy, Guinness, and others too silly to mention.

AG Investigation Hot Topic at September School Board Meeting

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Skidmore-Tynan ISD was held Monday, September 11, 2006, at 6:00 p.m. in the S-T ISD Board Room.

Mr. Thomas Mengers addressed the board in the "Public Forum" portion of the meeting. Mr. Mengers, referring to a specific agenda item, suggested that consultation with the District's lawyer was inappropriate if that consultation involved Trustee actions taken prior to election, or actions taken outside a legally called board meeting.

There was one action item on the meeting agenda: Action to retain school's legal counsel to communicate with the Attorney General's office regarding any and all matters on alleged investigation regarding Skidmore-Tynan ISD's Board members and staff (Mr. Rick Olivares). This item was tabled after superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez noted the meeting under investigation was not a board matter as it took place after the regular meeting had adjourned.

Trustees adjourned to closed session for consideration to Approve memo to Dr. Belmarez - failure to follow through (Mr. Olivares). No action was taken on this item.

Trustees approved the hiring of Kathy Rittiman as an Intervention Teacher. Mrs. Rittiman was formerly employed at Taft ISD.
