S-THS One-Act Play Awarded

Skidmore-Tynan’s 2011 One-Act Play Epic Proportions by Larry Coen and David Crane, directed by Pam Keeton, advanced from district for the third year in a row, Saturday April 2.  The crowd pleasing performance was recognized by the judge who awarded Kyle Scotten with Best Actor, Will Stridde and Holly Thomas earned All Star Cast status, and Amber Hughlett was named Honorable Mention to the All Star Cast. 

2011 One-Act Play Cast & Crew

Area competition was held Saturday, April 9 at Gregory-Portland High School.  The cast and crew delivered another crowd pleasing performance.  The cast and crew were named alternate to regional competition.  Kyle Scotten, Will Stridde, and Holly Thomas earned All Star Cast status and Amber Hughlett was again named Honorable Mention to the All Star Cast.

This year’s cast and crew contained 17 students.  Only 1 performer and 2 crew members are seniors which is not only a testimony to the hard work of this year’s students, but a promising glimpse at next year’s production.

UIL Academic Team - Regional Competition

The UIL Academic team traveled to San Marcos to compete in the UIL Academic Regional meet on April 16.  The team of Ben Krueger, Jose Luna, Zach Guerra, D’Anne Wilder, Sal Soto, Samantha Minter and Amber Hughlett represented Skidmore-Tynan extremely well.  Plans are in the works for next year’s trip to Austin.

S-T Junior High Recognized

Skidmore-Tynan Junior High Recognized as a 2010 NCEA Higher Performing School

The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), recognized The Skidmore-Tynan Junior High School for making the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List.

The Higher Performing Schools are identified by two measures: consistent improvement in student achievement from previous years and/or absolute student achievement using the school's Commended Performance results on the spring 2010 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test.  The measures identify schools that outperform their peers that serve similar student populations.  Additionally, the school must have greater than expected academic growth for three consecutive years to make the NCEA Higher Performing Schools List.

Research consistently shows that students who are only meeting the state’s passing standard during their K-12 experience do not graduate high school ready for college or careers.  Therefore the higher Commended standard on the TAKS provides a more accurate measure of student preparedness toward postsecondary opportunities.

This award recognizes the outstanding students and staff of the Skidmore-Tynan Junior High school whose reading program is second to none.   Although the program is demanding, the students reap the benefits of their hard work.

Skidmore-Tynan Takes First Place

...at the district UIL Meet in Banquete

Skidmore-Tynan Elementary Students

On Saturday, December 4, 2010, Skidmore-Tynan Elementary students and staff traveled to Banquete to participate in the District Academic UIL Meet.  S-T Elementary students competed against students from Banquete, Freer, Odem, Refugio, San Diego and Taft.  The writing portion of the contest took place prior to the meet at each respective school and sent off to be graded. Forty-nine students from S-T Elementary competed in the other events. The students earned thirty-one medals which included eighteen 1^st place, six 2^nd place and seven 3^rd place medals. The students also received 21 ribbons, which included:  six  4^th place, twelve 5^th place and three 6^th place ribbons.

S-T Elementary students earned 534 points and brought home the first place trophy for the third year in a row! The teachers and staff are very proud of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the students in preparation for their event.

S-T Awards Banquets Combined

Skidmore-Tynan High School will hold an award day Friday, May 22, starting at 9:30 a.m. in the High School Gymnasium. Students will receive awards from the following organizations: Athletics, FFA and Academic.

S-T ISD Athletics Director Adam Arroyo announces the annual Athletic Banquet will be held Monday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be $7 at the door and include a catered meal.

Schmidt Receives Houston Livestock Show Scholarship

The Signal congratulates Alexis Schmidt, recipient of a four-year $15,000 Area Go Texan scholarship. The scholarship is part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment to Texas students of more than $10.9 million in scholarships and educational programs.

Mengers Named District MVP, Grimes Coach of the Year

The 2009 District 31-2A All-District Basketball picks have been announced with the 10-0 in District Ladycats taking top honors. Coach Joseph L. Grimes III was named Coach of the Year and Junior Ladycat Rachel Mengers was named Most Valuable Player. Ladycats honored in the All-District picks were:

S-T High School Recognized by National News Magazine

Skidmore-Tynan High School was recently named one of the nation's finest by the weekly news magazine U.S. News & World Report. Of 1,829 Texas high schools, S-THS achieved Bronze Medal status - one of just 151 to be awarded a Bronze Medal or better. Only 32 Texas schools were awarded Silver or Gold medal status.

"U.S.News & World Report—in collaboration with School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education and data research and analysis business that provides parents with education data on schoolmatters.com—analyzed academic and enrollment data from more than 21,000 public high schools to find the very best across the country. These top schools were placed into gold, silver, bronze, or honorable mention categories."

Lions Punt Pass & Kick Results

The Skidmore-Tynan Lions Club hosted its 18th annual Punt Pass & Kick competition Saturday, September 20th at Bobcat Stadium. The weather for the event could not have been more cooperative as children, parents, coaches, and Lions Club members spent an enjoyable Saturday morning punting, passing, and kicking around the ol' pigskin.

In the 7 year old division, 1st place went to Marcus Hinojosa, 2nd to Cole Terry, 3rd to Daniel Tyrone, and 4th to Branden Boales. Also participating were Peyton Schmidt, Alyssa Arroyo, and Melanie Wolf. In the 8 year-old division, L.C. Hennig took 1st place and Vanessa Vega came in 2nd. Brady Bednorz placed 1st among the 9-year-olds with Derek Rodriguez and brother Damien Rodriguez taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the 10-year-old division, Timothy Diaz came in 1st place, followed by Gadge Perez in 2nd, Amanda House in 3rd, and Joshua Lopez in 4th. Alexander Hernandez took 1st place in the 11-year-old division with Michel Huerta taking 2nd.

The Lions thank S-T ISD Athletics Director Adam Arroyo and his staff for once again helping to make the event a success. Thanks also to all the parents who chose to spend a beautiful Saturday morning supporting and spending time with their children.

Bobcat and Ladycat of the Year Announced at Athletics Banquet

Congratulations to Bobcat of the Year Cory Markham and Ladycat of the Year Liz Torres. Awards were presented to the two at the annual Booster Club Athletic Banquet, held Monday, May 5, in the S-T ISD Cafetorium. Outgoing Booster Club president Homer Solis welcomed the athletes and parents to the banquet. Coleman Mengers took the podium to bless the meal, catered by Anthony's Barbecue. Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez gave a short congratulatory note and High School Principal Patty Holubec thanked the graduating Seniors for 4 great years. S-T Athletes to be Honored at Athletic Banquet

The Skidmore-Tynan Athletic Booster Club will host its annual athletic banquet Monday, May 5th, at 6:00 p.m. in the S-T ISD cafeteria. Meals will be provided for the athletes. Friends and family members may purchase additional meals for $7 the night of the event. The price of the meal includes a souvenir cup. Anthony’s Barbecue will cater the event.

Lopez National Science Merit Award Winner

S-T ISD Junior High student Kevin Lopez was named the National Science Merit Award Winner by the United Sates Achievement Academy. He was nominated by S-T JH teacher Amanda Stafford for his excellent work in the subject of science.

National Honor Society Inducts 15 New Members

The Skidmore-Tynan National Honor Society installed officers and inducted new members Thursday, February 7, at the S-TISD events center cafetorium. NHS Advisor Kathryn Head welcomed parents and students to the assembly.

Officers for the 2007-08 school year are President Erica Hall, Vice President Alexis Schmidt, Treasurer Devon Wilder, Secretary Joshua Petrus, and Public Relations Historian Miranda Bohac.

Bobcat Seniors Named to Caller-Times All South Texas Team

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times tagged S-T senior Cory Markham as their All South Texas Football First Team defensive linebacker. Clint Isaacks earned a spot on the All South Texas Offensive Second Team as a wide receiver.
