Lions Club Busy with Upcoming Fundraisers

Submitted by Lion Russ Duggins, Secretary.

We were unable to accomplish very much this past month. We experienced several inches of rain, 10 inches from around 2:00 P. M. ‘til 11:00 P. M. Our Fire Department was called out on several rescues and Lion Russ didn’t get much sleep. Being a member of the fire department, he was out assisting those who called for "help." For about twelve hours, Skidmore was cut-off from Beeville, Sinton and Mathis. You might say that we were an island for a while.

Lion John E. Simpson, Jr., our Vice-Governor elect and his lovely partner in service, Lion Dianne, from the Yorktown Lions visited with us at our first meeting. Lion John came and installed our new officers and we enjoyed our visit with him and Lion Dianne.

Our President, Lion Dave was contacted by Pake McEntire about the possibility of having him down to assist with a fund raiser. For those who might not know of Pake McEntire, he was part of the Singing McEntire’s. The group consisted of Pake, Reba and little sister, Susie. Everyone knows where Reba wound up. Pake took some time off to get his daughters through High School. Now, he is making a come back. We are working on getting this event planned and hoping that it will work out to be an annual event.

Lion Russ is in the middle of contacting all of the pro/semi athletic teams within the state and some of the college teams in the Kingsville/Corpus Christi area. Our idea is to have an "ALL SPORTS RAFFLE." Once we have received the answers to our requests, plans will start to come together. Hopefully, we will be able to have everything ready so we can advertise it around Christmas time.

Hopefully there will be more on these two events in the future. We have been looking for a fund raiser or two that will really assist us with our projects. If these two come together, they might just fill the ticket.

Our annual trek to Woodsboro has been canceled. The Woodsboro Lions have called off this years “Fourth of July on the Square” due to conflicting events. We are looking forward to going next year. We always enjoy being in Woodsboro at this time of year. The fellowship is GREAT.

Plans are in the works for our Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot and our Punt, Pass and Kick competition that is held at the school with the coaching staff assisting. Further information on these will be coming. -- Reprinted from July 2004 Lions Tale.
